My Diary part twenty eight AMK

AMK Community Hospital
Some good news. AMK hospital's Yanm Ting (Geriatric Cynic) managed to get an appointment for mum to consult with Dr Marie. Dr Marie De Souza had reviewed the medical information (AK's report, lab tests, scans) of mum we had submitted. It will be Tuesday, Feb 5, 10.30 am! She assured that we can admit her on same day! We need to thank her very much for this as the next admissions would be after Chinese New year in week of Feb 11.
Transport
I will arrange for private transport to pick up mum from JSH, but will need Aunty Steph / Uncle Hew to help with discharge papers and payments on that day (or day before?) As the appointment is 10.30 am, we will need to ask JSH how much time they need to do entire paperwork related to discharge, as we need to start travel ling from JSH from say 9.15 am to avoid any jam and travel slowly to avoid jerky movements to arrive in time at 10.30 am
"Tuan Yan Fun"
Dad, Kristy, Aunty Ivy's family and Seh Hui are all to come to my place in Crowhurst for "Tuan Yan Fun" / reunion dinner on Wed Feb 6. Candice and mum in law are cooking a simple meal. We can then all visit mum on following day (day 1 CNY) at AMK Hospital and give mum good wishes!

It takes only a couples of seconds to like a person.And it takes a few minutes to feel strongly about a person's statement.It takes an hour or more to remember some one advice.But why it takes a life time for a person to dislike another person,why we live like cats and dogs.Obstacles in life is an learning opportunities.Seperation in life is a painful and cruelty decision,but there is always sacrifices to gain others goals in life.Personality is build from environment,upbringing and spouse's influence.The magic of relationship is deepened understanding in between two person's compassion.The more positive you are,the more fortunate your life will be.The more motivated you are,there will be more positive peoples around you.The more vibe you have,the more you are welcome in many places.The reason why human's beliefs system are different is because the education they received is diferent.Is there any form of method that human can create a more harmonious environment not a world full of cruelty.

Our Responsibility

"There is still time to change" This is the motto for our website. We really mean this though. There are many ways you can help the stop of Global Warming:
· You could buy a hybrid car, that doesn’t give off as much carbon emissions then a regular SUV. The hybrid car saves 5,200 pounds of carbon emissions in the air.
· You can recycle items such as: Glass, metal, newspapers, and other paper and plastics.
· Use resources for energy such as, wind, hydro, and solar power.
· Use fluorescent light bulbs
· Put computer to sleep mode when not using
· Get an energy star refrigerator
· Keep tires filled so the air doesn’t go out into the atmosphere.
· Ride a bike and use public transportations.
These are a few ways that you could help, you could also help the people that look at this website and you could post other ways that you can help the continuation of global warming. We also recommend that you tell other siblings, friends, and family members about this, and try to get the word out. If we do not take part in the action now, the next generation wont be able to see the world we live in today. As we said, "There is still time to change."

Waste in the E-waste
About every year, Americans waste 20 million computers and 130 million cell phones. The U.N said that the United States wastes 50 million tons of electronic waste yearly. These wastes are often known as "e-waste". E-waste usually ends up in India, China, or Nigeria. Workers in those areas try to recycle as much as they can, but most ends up dumped or burned, which adds more Co2 to the atmosphere. Now, people are trying to cut down on their e-waste by passing laws and signing treaties. Computer companies are promoting recycling, such as Dell.
Alternate Sources of Energy
Many people around the world are looking for other sources of energy besides fossil fuels. In windy places such as New York, windmills generate enough electric power to power about 160,000 homes for one day. People in sunny climates use solar power instead of electricity, and countries are looking to ethanol as a type of fuel. However, ethanol causes deaths due to lung cancer every day. Some people do flat- out conserving, such as buying a hybrid, or walking instead of driving to the store.
Inventions for Conservation
Some people, such Avery Hairston make inventions that conserve energy. Hairston, age 15, has founded a charity called RelightNY. The charity helps people who struggle with their energy costs. He also gives people better fluorescent light bulbs because they can’t afford it. He encourages that people who can buy the light bulbs should buy fluorescents for themselves and for others who can’t afford.
Top Polluters
Some countries don’t put too much carbon dioxide into the air but five countries are polluting a lot more than every other country in the world. Here are the countries and approximately how much carbon dioxide they put into the atmosphere.
· United States—5.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide
· China—5.2 billion tons
· Russia—1.9 billion tons
· Japan—1.4 billion tons
· India—1.2 billion tons
As you can see, the United States is the top polluter and China is close behind. But Russia’s 1.9 billion tons may not seem like a staggering amount compared to the United States 5.5 billion tons, it is a lot of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere

An Inconvenient Truth

Global Warming and Pollution
The movie, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ by Al Gore talks about what is happening right now because of global warming and what we can do.
The first picture is a picture of a mountain in February, 1993. Seven years later in February, 2000, most of the ice has melted. This is one of the many dramatic affects of global warming.
Most factories, such as this one, are major causes of pollution around the world. This is how much pollution is being released into the atmosphere every day.
Many species of penguins that are native to Antarctica may be killed because the ice that they live on may melt when the temperatures rise.
Using and driving hybrid cars will help the environment. They use electricity and little gas to run the car.
You can also use public transportation to cut down on Co2 emissions.
Economy jets also save fuel and carry more people than private jets.

Vitamin C

This is a very appropriate exercise for this course and one of the few that illustrates basic chemical properties of a vitamin. It is included in many lab manuals in various forms, especially for Organic & Biochemistry courses, and can be applied to many foods besides orange juice. Titration of vitamin C is usually done with either iodine or an organic dye like DCIP. Iodine is less expensive and works fine for us. I have students compare vitamin C contents of fresh, reconstituted frozen, and canned orange juices. Although they are similar, there is an interesting and counterintuitive trend we see every year.
Students begin by standardizing the iodine solution (0.125% iodine, 1% potassium iodide) with 1.00 mg/mL ascorbic acid (made fresh). They use a 25-mL volumetric pipet to transfer 25.00 mL of ascorbic acid to a 125-mL flask and add 2 mL of 6 M acetic acid and 3 mL of 1% starch. They then titrate to a blue endpoint with iodine solution from a 50-mL buret. I caution them about bubbles, show them how to read the miniscus, and describe the approach to endpoint. From the volume of titrant they used, they calculate the "volume of iodine that reacts with 1 mg of ascorbic acid."
They then use the same method to determine the amount of iodine needed to titrate 25-mL samples of fresh, reconstituted frozen, and canned orange juice. The orange juices were previously strained through cheesecloth. The endpoint isn't as obvious as with the ascorbic acid, but even with that subjective variation, students find similar trends. Using the number ("volume of iodine...") they obtained above, they calculate the concentration of vitamin C in each orange juice, generally finding values ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 mg/mL.
The trend is that canned orange juice seems to have the highest concentration of vitamin C; fresh orange juice usually has the lowest. Students find this counterintuitive because they are taught that heating, as in the canning process, destroys vitamins. I use their surprise to lead into the question of what they conclude, from the chemistry they learned here, to be the most important cause of ascorbic acid loss in processed orange juice.

my dream is to have a spa retreat for all stressful ppl in the outskirt with organic farm for food and little wooden chalets for a two day 1 night weekend escapade. It's really a great idea, only need to have land and connections. Then with aggressive marketing or networking sure boleh.
